I was pretty outraged about the article "Orphan works" Bill. How can the gov't do this to us?
An Orphaned Work is any creative work of art where the artist or copyright owner has released their copyright, whether on purpose, by passage of time, or by lack of proper registration. In the same way that an orphaned child loses the protection of his or her parents, your creative work can become an orphan for others to use without your permission.
In short, this law will remove present copyright laws so that you do not own ANY of the artwork you create unless you PAY to copyright it... So any work you've created and haven't registered can be claimed and registered by ANYONE else. THEY'RE LEGALIZING THEFT AND GETTING RID OF CREATIVITY!
So if one big fat company finds your character to be intimidating and finds out it is not copyrighted LAWFULLY, they will take it, make it as THEIR character, make money by making t-shirts, mugs, or pillows while you cry for losing the chracter you have really worked on!
there are some DA artists saying "Chill out! It's not gonna happen~ Stop making a drama!"
Guess what? Expect the UNEXPECT! At least than sitting down doing nothing, let's make some at least an effort that we do care about our art
Please, go to this site and sign the petition [link]
I swear if that bill goes through someday you can be sure that artists of all sorts will riot, cause destruction, break crap, etc. Looking at just the number of artists on art websites alone a country wouldn't want that.

Woah, a little angry? Anyone who'd have been watching Hitler would have known he would have attempted his Final Solution, and anyway, there's a rule on the internet called Godwin's Law, and you've just KILLED THE ARGUEMENT. Anyway, ut's not that bad. Have you read any of the Admin's journal's about it? You might want to.

CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN TO ME WHO DECIDED IT WAS A SMART IDEA TO NOT ALLOW PEOPLE TO EDIT THEIR SIGNATURE BEYOND ONE LETTER!?!?!?!?!
It's always been like that, in fact this is nothing new at all. They just gave what happens when a copyrght runs out a name.
And you can't copyright a character anyway, you you have to have it trademarked. And even if a company stole a character from someone here, although I highly doubt that would happen here.
Also you can sue them, if they stole your character, as long as you can prove that you created the character first.
Well I was talking about trademarked by the federal government, but besides if you have the original with a date, posted here for example, a CG artist's editing won't hold up/
Besides another way to protect your work is to mail a copy of it to yourself and never open it, since the post office puts a stamp in it with the date. And if your character is stolen you can take that unopened letter to court as evedance
wow, if the bill is as bad as you say it is.. Yea, what's there to chill man..? I see the govt is really trying to earn money off people who are able to pay for copyrights.. since DA's a U.S. website, I expect they follow the U.S. law?? If so, we're screwed up big time.. XD wonder if the Creative commons helps counter this.. :/
